Charlton Athletic Face Championship Battle For £900K-Rated Alfie May Replacement

Charlton Athletic have been on the lookout for a new centre-forward to replace Alfie May should a sale of the frontman come to fruition, according to the latest reports.

It was revealed in the press a few weeks ago that recently-relegated League One side Huddersfield Town were hoping to secure May’s signature this summer in an attempt to bounce straight back to the Championship. The Terriers’ new head coach Michael Duff was the striker’s former manager during his time at Cheltenham Town and was the man who initially brought him to Gloucestershire back in 2020.

Furthermore, Football Insider released a report last week announcing that Huddersfield had agreed a £750,000 fee with the Addicks to sign May, although Richard Cawley from the South London Press held a contrarian position on X, formerly known as Twitter, stating that there had been no monetary agreement between the two clubs over a possible transfer.

In a further development on the transfer saga, Football Insider reported that Birmingham City were set to hijack Huddersfield’s swoop for May and had submitted a bit worth £775,000 to Charlton Athletic for the 30-year-old. Cawley later concurred with this revelation, claiming that the South London side accepted the Blues’ bid.

In what was an incredibly difficult season for Charlton, as the side flirted with relegation to League Two, May managed to bag 25 goals in 47 appearances in all competitions and finished as the top goalscorer in League One with 23 in 43 matches.

The Addicks will have a tough time replacing their talisman after he arrived just 12 months ago but are looking at the Championship to do so. Football Insider have now revealed that Nathan Jones’ side have turned their attention towards Coventry City forward Matt Godden, who has entered into the final 12 months of his contract at the CBS Arena.

Charlton Athletic Target Confirms Birmingham City Departure

The 32-year-old scored nine goals in 41 appearances for the Sky Blues last season but it is believed that he will leave the club this summer. Furthermore, the outlet are claiming that Charlton face competition from newly-promoted second-tier side Oxford United following interest from Swansea City in Mark Harris’ signature.

Godden had a decent season with Coventry, but now nearing his 33rd birthday and the last year of his deal, Mark Robins may be looking to offload the experienced striker this summer to avoid losing him for free next summer. He currently boasts a market value of between £595,000-930,000, as per FootballTransfers.

Additionally, Godden is a proven goalscorer in League One, having previously scored 28 times in 73 games in England’s third tier. While he may not hit May’s heights from last season, he could still somewhat fill a goalscoring void at Charlton Athletic heading into the 2024/25 campaign.
