Rotherham United Sign Experienced Championship Man

Rotherham United have signed Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Cameron Dawson on a two-year deal, according to their official website.

The 28-year-old becomes the TENTH signing at the club, as they show no signs of slowing down. He has made the move across South Yorkshire having played for the Owls over 120 times, managing over 40 clean sheets along the way, which includes four last season in the Championship.

Dawson, who will compete with fellow keeper Dillon Phillips for the number one jersey, joins on a free transfer with his contract expiring with the Championship side at the end of this month. The shot-stopper has also turned out for Exeter City and Alfreton Town on loan.

The Sheffield-born stopper has achieved promotion twice in his career, once with Exeter City from League Two, where he was on loan. He played 45 times for the Grecians, managing an impressive 18 shutouts.

The Millers have spent the summer very busy as they look for a new direction under Evans, after he replaced former boss Leam Richardson at the end of last season. They came bottom of the second tier having managed just five wins all season.

Rotherham boss Steve Evans was happy to secure Dawson’s signature, speaking to the club website, he said:

“I’m absolutely delighted to secure the signature of young Cameron.

“He’s a player that I’ve watched play for Sheffield Wednesday on many occasions and is a player that has turned in some magnificent displays during that time.”

“He had options to stay at Hillsborough and others elsewhere in the Championship and a multitude of options in League One, so to get him to AESSEAL New York Stadium is a great acquisition.

“Cam comes in to add real competition with Dillon Phillips in the goalkeeping department, where I believe we’re looking really strong now.”

The club returns to pre-season training this week with two very dependable keepers on their books and it’s looking likely to be an intriguing battle between the duo.

He becomes the second signing of the day with midfielder Alex MacDonald also being added to the Millers ranks. The 34-year-old joins from Stevenage upon the expiry of his contract, also at the end of June.

Surely Evans and Rotherham will slow down soon, with ten new signings plus contracted players, they must be close to capacity at the New York Stadium.

Dawson has struggled at times at Wednesday but he is also very dependable and experienced. One of the main attributes needed to get out of a league as tough as the third tier is experience.

One thing is for sure, the board are backing Evans and that’s going to be some wage budget as they look for an immediate return to the second tier.
