Former Manchester United Academy Prospect Finds Altrincham F.C Move

Altrincham F.C. have completed the signing of Max Haygarth on a one-year deal according to the club’s official website.

The attacker began his career at Manchester United before leaving in 2021 due to reoccurring injury issues. Following the departure, he would join Brentford and would feature a number of times for the Bees but a lack of chances would come as a result of promotion to the Premier League.

The Manchester-born player would then find further experience in the Northern Ireland Premier League with Linfield despite interest from Luton Town, Sheffield United and many others. This would come to an end in January 2024 as his contract was terminated by mutual consent.

Despite showing glimpses of potential, the 22-year-old would lack opportunities regularly. A move to Altrincham would be made in March 2024. However, he would only feature as a substitute in a 6-1 win against York City.

Following the departure of Chris Conn-Clarke to Peterborough the midfielder could be provided with a new opportunity. When talking to AltyTV he stated:

” I can play on the wing, but I’m better in the central positions, and I would like to play in the number 10 role- I think that is my main position”.

This shows he looks to replace Conn-Clarke and become a mainstay for the Robins. With the direct-attacking football, Haygarth has a new opportunity to excel at the level. The 22-year-old compared himself to his predecessor stating:

“I know there are big boots to fill there. I saw plenty of Chris when I was here last season, and some of the things he can do are just unbelievable.”

After being so close to promotion to the football league for the first time in their history, Phil Parkinson’s side narrowly missed out. In a bid to build on the momentum, the 22-year-old could be an integral part of Altrincham’s season.

Attacking players and versatility was a major contributor to their success last term. Players such as Alex Newby, Conn-Clarke and Reagan Linney offer flexibility in the front-line made the Robins a tricky side to defeat and they’ll be hoping that is the case for next season despite losing their star.

Writer’s View

Throughout the 2023-24 campaign, Conn-Clarke played a major role in the Robins’ success. With his departure, can Haygarth fulfil his monumental role?

With great experience under coaches at Manchester United and Brentford, it is evident that the skills and qualities are there. Consistency could play a prominent role in determining the forward’s success however that is no guarantee given his injury record. It’s certainly a punt, hence only handing him a one year deal but for Altrincham to succeed, the 22-year-old has to flourish.
