After a sensational season in the National League, Chris Conn Clarke has become a target for many clubs including Peterborough United. Despite their first bid being rejected, here’s why Darren Ferguson’s side should continue their pursuit.
As Altrincham just missed out on the play-off final following a 3-1 loss away to Bromley, the future of many players is undecided. Conn-Clarke has been exceptional this season, and if Phil Parkinson’s side won the play-offs, many would’ve expected him to guide the Robins through their inaugural League Two season.
However, with no step up in league and quality, is the 22-year-old ready for a bigger challenge? With huge interest from League One outfit Peterboroughbthis could be a great opportunity for the attacker.
Why Conn-Clarke Is The Right Man For Peterborough
Peterborough have seen great success from purchasing from the National League. Conn-Clarke could well be the next, following in the footsteps of the likes of Kwame Poku and Ronnie Edwards.
As a direct attacking outfit, the 22-year-old would suit Darren Ferguson’s style perfectly. Pace, creativity and trickery are just a few features of his game. Furthermore, Peterborough utilise their wingers to play a vital role in the attack which further enhances his claims.
The Northern Ireland international is very versatile and his role at the Robins has varied from game to game. He can play a deeper role in centre midfield, both wings and in more attacking positions almost as a second striker. This versatility makes him a useful player across the pitch and also provides any club in the English Football League a huge advantage with the amount of games to play in a season.

In addition, the former Burnley man fits the system deployed by Darren Ferguson with the four attacking options also used by Altrincham. Being used to the formation and being able to play any of the positions in the front line, will make adapting to the league easier.
His numbers have also been outstanding for a midfielder. Conn-Clarke has managed to find the net 23 times with 12 assists; playing a key role in Altrincham’s strong season. This has led to the playmaker being featured in the National League team of the season as the only player from Phil Parkinson’s side.
Despite these strengths, moving into League One will be a huge step up in quality from the National League. Teams such as Birmingham, Huddersfield and Bolton possess Championship quality players, as the standard of the league is on the rise. This major increase in quality may lead the Robins’ star man to struggle to find his feet.

Overall, this would be a good signing for the Posh. Despite an initial bid being rejected, the club could look to find a deal that Altrincham can’t afford to dismiss. A fee won’t be expected to be too high and the 22-year-old will be a great addition to the squad further bolstering their depth.
For Conn-Clarke, a move to an ambitious League One side, after just missing out on promotion. He can develop even more and become a mainstay of the project as they target promotion to the Championship.
As for Altrincham, it is clear how important the former Fleetwood player is. This is suggested by Phil Parkinson who stated “If he is still with us at the start of next season, I will have the biggest smile on my face you have ever seen. If not, I won’t exactly be amazed.”
However, if a significant deal is offered, he could fund multiple players and increase Parkinson’s chance of reaching the Football league that has eluded the club for so long.
