Sheffield Wednesday Survival Unlikely Says Supercomputer

Sheffield Wednesday have been handed a very slim chance of staying in the Championship this season ahead of the final three matches of the 2023/24 campaign.

A gruelling start to the season put the Owls in a dire situation in October, having gone the first 13 matches without a victory, leaving the side rock bottom of the Championship before a 2-0 win over Rotherham United under new head coach Danny Rohl kickstarted the campaign for the South Yorkshire club.

The German manager took over a fortnight before Halloween and if the table started when he arrived at Hillsborough, Sheffield Wednesday would be sitting 14th in the Championship, eight points clear of the relegation zone.

Rohl, who became the youngest manager in the history of the EFL, came close to lifting his team outside the dreaded bottom three last Saturday when Stoke City came to town. Unfortunately, a late Luke Cundle goal for the visitors meant the spoils were shared, keeping the Owls in the drop zone.

The result meant that Wednesday have given themselves a monumental task to survive in the Championship, with three huge games coming up against Blackburn Rovers, West Bromwich Albion and Sunderland, two of which are away from home.

According to Opta’s latest projections, the result last weekend has meant that Rohl’s men have a very small chance of keeping themselves in England’s second tier this term. The data company have calculated that Sheffield Wednesday have merely a 21.9% chance of staying in the division, meaning there is a 78.1% chance of relegation.

These stats will change after the weekend’s results depending on whether Sheffield Wednesday pick up a win or not. Beating Blackburn would give them a better chance of survival, while a defeat would drastically increase their relegation odds.

However, it’s not looking good for Rohl’s men. Despite positive results in recent weeks against Queens Park Rangers and Norwich City, allowing Stoke to bag an equaliser may be looked at as a significant turning point should they be relegated back to League One.
