Luton Town are ready to step up their interest in Blackburn Rovers star Sammie Szmodics, regardless of whether they achieve Premier League survival, according to journalist Alan Nixon.
The 28-year-old is in the midst of his most fruitful season to date. He is currently the Championship’s top scorer with 23 goals, with his form earning him his international debut with the Republic of Ireland last month.
It’s been a turbulent campaign for Blackburn. Although they have recorded just one defeat from their last six league outings, they are still embroiled in a relegation scrap and sit just four points above the drop zone in 16th.
Manager John Eustace picked up his first win last week since taking over the role in February when his side dismantled Sunderland 5-1 at the Stadium of Light. It was a day when Rovers’ talisman showed his qualities, bagging a brace whilst also providing an assist.
Wary that his goalscoring antics would be catching the eye of potential suitors, the 1995 Premier League champions made the smart move of tying the attacker down to a new deal in November, extending his stay at Ewood Park until 2026. There is also the option to extend that by an additional year.

As such, Blackburn are not in a position where they are forced to accept offers for the former Peterborough United player, although will be expecting a host of enquiries once the transfer window opens in the summer. Scottish champions Celtic have been linked, as have Premier League trio Brentford, Fulham and Luton.
According to Nixon, the Hatters are ready to step up their interest and will make a move for the player regardless of what division they will be playing in next season. Rob Edwards’ side are currently languishing within the bottom three in the top tier. However, yesterday’s 2-1 win over Bournemouth did draw them level on points with Nottingham Forest, although the Reds do possess a superior goal difference and a game in hand.
Meanwhile, Blackburn have five games to salvage their Championship status, starting on Wednesday night when they make the trip to Bristol City.

Blackburn will have a real fight on their hands to keep hold of Sammie Szmodics this summer. He has been one of the standout players in the Championship this season and has a very real shout of winning the division’s Player of the Season, having received his nomination last week.
Rovers were smart in extending his contract last year, especially considering the start to the campaign he had. Although his previous deal wasn’t due to expire until 2025, this allowed the club to further protect his value. Obviously, they would prefer him to remain at Ewood Park, but they know that they can now drive any potential fee upwards, especially as the player is happy at the club.
