Five Championship Games To Look Out For This Weekend

As we enter February, the drama in the EFL really intensifies, with teams desperately trying to avoid relegation, gain promotion or maybe spark a late play-off push. Most Championship teams have around 17 games left to play, so every point possesses priceless value.

Here, we take a look at five of the stand out games from the Championship this weekend.

1. Relegation Six-Pointer

Huddersfield Town parted company with manager Darren Moore in midweek after just one league win in 10 and with the club sitting just three points above the relegation zone. They face fellow strugglers Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday afternoon, in what could be a big swing in points for either side as both look to avoid the drop.

Only Queens Park Rangers have a worse record on their own patch this season than Huddersfield, whilst Wednesday’s away form has provided two wins all season, so something has to give in the massive fixture.

2. Ewood Park Hosts Important Clash

Despite their emphatic 4-1 victory over League Two Wrexham in the FA Cup on Monday night, Jon Dahl Tomasson’s Blackburn Rovers are the most out-of-form side in the Championship, with just one win in 10 matches. The Danish manager is under immense pressure to turn fortunes around at Ewood Park and have a good chance to put things right on Saturday, when they play host to Queens Park Rangers.

The visitors come into this one three points away from safety down at the bottom of the table and whilst being unbeaten in their last two, Marti Cifuentes’ side will be hoping to use Rovers’ poor form to their advantage.

3. Chance For Argyle First Away Triumph

Another side drastically out of form are Swansea City, who are winless in their first four matches under former Notts County manager Luke Williams. They have slid down to 17th in the table on the same amount of points as Plymouth Argyle, who travel to Wales on Saturday.

Ian Foster’s team come into this one with just one defeat in their last 10, and will be dying to finally win away from home, having failed at doing so in their other 14 matches on the road this season.

4. Ipswich Bounce Back

It’s fair to say that very few people saw Ipswich Town‘s shock FA Cup defeat to Maidstone United coming last week, with the National League South side 98 places below The Tractor Boys pulling off a giant-killing at Portman Road.

Kieran Mckenna’s boys will be looking for an immediate bounceback when they travel to Preston North End over the weekend, and focus on their promotion bid. Their hosts are still in the play-off hunt however and are tough to beat at Deepdale, so it will definitely not be easy for the visitors.

5. Tough Ask For The Millers

Rotherham United have without a doubt really struggled this season and face no respite on Saturday when they host high-flying Southampton. The Millers are 11 points away from safety at the bottom of the table and are winless in their last five matches in all competitions.

In complete contrast, Russell Martin’s Saints are steamrolling their way towards the Premier League, unbeaten in a staggering 20 matches and just one point off the automatic promotion places. Expect a routine win for promotion-chasers.
