‘Utterly shocking’, ‘Just awful’ – These Portsmouth fans react as Southampton man helps them to defeat

Portsmouth’s season went from bad to worse as a moment of skill from a Southampton loanee condemned them to defeat against Doncaster Rovers.

Josh Sims only joined Rovers yesterday, but after coming on as a second-half substitute,  he created the only goal of the game for the home side. He jinxed down the flank and put the ball into the path of Reece James, who netted the only goal of the game on 79 minutes.

In a rather insipid game which had little quality, it was Doncaster who edged the first half, with Portsmouth struggling to get hold of the ball. The closest either side came to scoring was when defender Sean Raggett almost put into his own net, slicing a clearance wide.

Fejiri Okenabirhie did make Pompey keeper Craig MacGillivray work, drawing a save after the break, but neither side really looked like breaking the deadlock until James’ strike.

The result leaves Portsmouth tenth in the table, eight points shy of leaders Ipswich at this early stage. It isn’t the results that will be the biggest worry for their long-suffering supporters though; the performance was poor with little in the way of clear-cut chances. Back to back wins against Burton Albion and MK Dons haven’t satisfied the fanbase, who are increasingly vocal in their anger at manager Kenny Jackett.
With no incomings on deadline day and a forward line looking desperately short of goals, these supporters are keen to see some sort of change at the club, and if the messages are anything to go by, that means one man departing sooner, rather than later.
