‘Stale, unintelligent, uninspiring’ – These Portsmouth fans react to Wigan Athletic defeat

Portsmouth’s season went from bad to worse as they suffered their first home defeat in the league since April 2019.

The visitors were Wigan Athletic and they took the lead six minutes before half-time, as Lee Evans fired home after solid work by former Pompey loanee Viv.

The Latics doubled their advantage in the second half with a wonder 30-yard free-kick courtesy of Tom James. With a little help from the blustery wind, James’ free-kick deceived home goalkeeper Craig MacGillivray, who only ended up helping the ball into the net.

Shot-shy Pompey have failed to score in their opening two encounters and they only really threatened the visitors in the last ten minutes. With a little under 60 seconds left of normal time, Ellis Harrison gave them hope of a result after a knock-down by John Marquis.

It was too little, too late and a cacophony of boos should have rained down on the Blues as they left the pitch. It was an uninspiring and toothless outing against a so-called crisis club, and it only serves to increase the pressure on boss Kenny Jackett.

They started badly last season too, recovering to edge into the top six, but if these fans are to be listened too, Jackett shouldn’t get a chance to pull it back around for more of the same this season.
