‘He’s gone’, ‘Embarrassing’ – These Portsmouth fans react to latest club announcement

Usually, by this time of year, ‘silly-season’ is over for most football clubs.

Thanks to the pandemic and subsequent early cessation of the season, we’re still seeing social media stupidity raging across all our clubs. Every signing is met with comments such as ‘and another one’, fans are getting indignant about kit colours and anything a club tries to do positive can be twisted and misconstrued.

Yesterday, we even saw one Twitter account making predictions for the new season, long before many teams have made a couple of signings. It’s embarrassing (more so than constant articles feeding on the fan reaction, like this!) and it must drive the social media teams at clubs utterly crazy.

Portsmouth felt the full force of this madness yesterday when an innocuous tweet highlighting a new club shop item was met with the sort of anger some argued against the PPG model last season. They announced their mascot, Frogmore was now available to buy in small teddy form in the club shop.

Harmless, right? Kids will love it and it’s a different item for fans to purchase. What could possibly be negatively construed here? Well, everything. If we were playing ‘social media bingo, Portsmouth edition’, you could guarantee a dig at Kenny Jackett, a dig at the item itself and maybe something around new signings too. Let’s see, shall we? Below is a selection of genuine tweet to this simple, promotional post.
