Portsmouth’s promotion hopes took a big boost last night as they won a five-goal thriller against Rotherham at Fratton Park.
It’s been a tough opening few months for Kenny Jackett’s side, with performances on the wane and wins difficult to come by even in games they dominated. Last night, in a real humdinger of an encounter, they were on the right side of a 3-2 victory to lift them to within touching distance of the top six.
Ronan Curtis got them off to the perfect start with an opening goal in the first minute, but £500,000 man Freddie Ladapo got a leveller for Rotherham on the quarter-hour mark. John Marquis restored the home side’s lead, giving them the advantage at half time.
Ladapo was on target again in the second half, bagging just after the hour to give a resilient Rotherham parity once more, but that lasted just four minutes as Ben Close bagged what turned out to be the winner.
The result leaves Pompey tenth, just two points shy of Oxford in 6th, three behind Rotherham and Coventry above them but with a game in hand on both.
With one defeat in 12 across all competitions, it appears the calls for Kenny Jackett’s head are subsiding as the promotion challenge develops.
