‘This team is a lost cause’ – Plenty of Southend fans are already predicting relegation after the latest heavy defeat

Southend United suffered yet another heavy defeat last night, leaving many of their fans resigned to watching League Two football next season even before the Christmas trees have gone up.

The arrival of Sol Campbell may have improved performances, but it does not appear to have had the immediate impact of improving results, and despite holding an improving Portsmouth side at bay almost until half-time, the Blues came away from Fratton Park the wrong side of a 4-1 scoreline.

After only a couple of games it is unfair to judge Campbell just yet, but what is abundantly clear is he will need backing with some substantial investment in January if he is to repeat his great escape of last year with Macclesfield.

Tuesday night’s defeat was the Shrimpers fourteenth in the league already this season. It left them second from bottom of the table, only seven points clear of Bolton who started the season on minus twelve following their well-documented troubles.

Campbell will no doubt back himself to turn around their fortunes, but judging by the social media reaction to the latest result, he’s got his work cut out to convince Southend supporters that anything other than relegation beckons for them this campaign.

These are dark times at Roots Hall, and many fans admitted they had either given up or were past caring when they posted their reaction on Twitter.

Here is a small selection of their posts.
