‘The right call,’ ‘Ashamed to be a Wimbledon fan’ – These Dons fans are divided after major club statement

AFC Wimbledon have parted company with manager Wally Downes two days after he was suspended for four weeks by the FA for a breach of betting rules.

The fifty-eight-year-old took over the Dons in December last year with the club in deep relegation trouble and performed a minor miracle in leading them to League One safety.

Nonetheless, he was suspended by the club last month after being charged with placing bets on games.

Glyn Hodges has since been in temporary charge and led the side to their third league win on the bounce on Saturday with a 1-0 home victory over Portsmouth.

Wimbledon fans were divided when they took to social media to react to the news. Many felt the club had dealt with the situation poorly, and that a Dons legend like Downes should have received more support from the fan-owned club. Others felt the time was right for Downes to leave and wanted Hodges to be given the job permanently after an impressive run of results.

Here is a small selection of responses to the club statement on Twitter.
