Football Insider reports that Blackpool were the reason their plans to appoint Henrik Larsson collapsed last week.
The Shrimpers had intended to appoint former Celtic hero Larsson as manager, with Johan Jallby as his assistant. The deal hinged on bringing in a director of football, with Tommy Johnson the man who would pull everything together.
The deal was all but done when Johnson accepted a role at another club. As he pulled out, the deal collapsed and Southend are still in the hunt for a manager.
It’s now believed that Johnson is set to join Simon Grayson at Blackpool as head of recruitment. The 48-year-old has also reportedly turned down Celtic to take the role, despite having previously played for the Parkhead giants.
Johnson left a similar role at Nottingham Forest last season and will move to a side eighth in League One with aspirations of promotion. Southend 22nd in the same division, are in dire straight and only being kept off the bottom of the table by crisis-club Bolton Wanderers.
This was a big blow to Southend but it’s unlikely they’ll be too despondent about where he’s going; it’s largely irrelevant now.
They’re not going to move for Larsson and some reports have suggested the former Barcelona man is furious with Johnson, a teammate of his at Parkhead.
Blackpool are going well in League One but they’re still in transition after finally ousting the Oyston regime last season. Johnson is another brick in the building of what they hope is a Championship team.
