AFC Wimbledon Among Clubs Eyeing Former Ipswich Town Striker

AFC Wimbledon are among the clubs showing interest in Swindon Town forward Aaron Drinan after his prolific start to the season.

The 27-year-old has been in fine form for the Robins, scoring six goals in eight League Two appearances and attracting suitors from the division above.

Dons Tracking In-Form Striker

Reports suggest Wimbledon are monitoring Drinan closely as they consider bolstering their forward line in January. The striker only committed to a new two-year contract at Swindon in June, meaning any deal would require a transfer fee.

Drinan began his career in Ireland with Waterford before Ipswich Town brought him across the water in 2018. Limited opportunities at Portman Road eventually saw him move to Leyton Orient in 2021, where he enjoyed regular football. After joining Swindon in February 2024, he has rediscovered his best form and quickly become a key figure at the County Ground.

Speaking after signing his extension in the summer, Drinan said:

“I’m really pleased to be extending my stay at Swindon. I’ve enjoyed every minute here, and I believe we’re building something special. The fans have been brilliant, and I’m excited to keep pushing forward with the club over the next two seasons.”

Despite that commitment, his current form has put him firmly in the shop window. Alongside Wimbledon, Barnsley, Exeter City and Lincoln City are also thought to be monitoring his progress ahead of the January transfer window.

Battle For His Signature

The Dons are aiming to build on a solid start to the League One campaign and see added firepower as a potential difference-maker in a competitive division. Barnsley’s promotion push and Lincoln’s steady progress add further competition, while Exeter are also reportedly keen.

For Swindon, losing Drinan mid-season would be a significant blow, especially given his importance to their attacking output. With two years left on his deal, they are in a strong negotiating position and any suitor will have to make a convincing offer.

Writer’s View

AFC Wimbledon’s interest in Drinan underlines their ambition to keep pace with League One’s stronger sides. The forward’s combination of work rate and recent goal return makes him an attractive target, and his experience across the EFL suggests he could adapt quickly to the demands of a higher level.

The Dons face stiff competition from promotion-chasing Barnsley and rivals Lincoln, but their ability to act decisively in January may determine whether they can secure his services.
