Ipswich Town have injury concerns over midfielder Flynn Downes after he limped out of England duty last night.
Downes was used as a second-half substitute for England Under-20s during their 3-0 defeat to the Czech Republic at Peterborough United’s London Road ground but hobbled off with minutes to go after a harmless looking off the ball incident.
The current League One leaders are set to assess the damage ahead of their visit to Accrington Stanley at the weekend according to a report in the East Anglian Daily Times.
The twenty-year-old midfielder has had an excellent season so far; he’s established himself as an important member of Paul Lambert’s team since making his debut in 2017. He made thirty-one appearances in last season’s ill-fated attempt to stay in the Championship, and he’s started every league game and scored one goal in the Tractors Boys impressive start to this season.
Downes high energy, hard-working performances will be a miss for Lambert who will be keeping his fingers crossed the injury is not too serious as he looks to continue to build on an excellent start to life in League One and guide Town to an immediate return to the second tier.
Our View
It is a reflection on the high standard of League One this season that the number of players involved in the international scene appears to be increasing.
While it is fantastic for clubs to see their players go out and play and train with players from higher levels, the downside is several League One managers are spending more time keeping their fingers crossed their players return fit and ready to go.
We sincerely hope the injury is not severe and the talented young midfielder is ready to take his place at Accrington on Sunday.
