Ipswich Town vs Sheffield Wednesday: Prediction, Lineups & Odds (20/12/25)

Promotion-chasing Ipswich Town welcome relegation-bound Sheffield Wednesday to Portman Road in the Championship on Saturday.

Our Three Predictions For Ipswich Town vs Sheffield Wednesday

  • First Prediction: Ipswich Town To Win -1 Handicap – 8/13
  • Second Prediction: Over 2.5 Goals – 8/15
  • Third Prediction: Both Teams To Score – No – 4/6

First Prediction For Ipswich Town vs Sheffield Wednesday – Ipswich Town To Win -1 Handicap – 8/13

After a reasonably slow start, Ipswich have nestled nicely in the play-off positions in recent weeks. Always considered one of the favourites for promotion to the Premier League this season, it seems as if they are ready to make a serious claim during the second half of the campaign.

The Tractor Boys have been a little indifferent in recent weeks. They have won just 2 of their last 5, which includes a 3-1 defeat at Leicester City last weekend.

Both of their victories have come at Portman Road during this spell. The most impressive was a 3-0 triumph over league leaders Coventry City earlier this month.

In stark contrast, Sheffield Wednesday‘s place in League One next season is all-but-confirmed. A series of sanctions means they are on -9 points heading into the Christmas period, and their young squad has picked up just 1 win to date.

This is a run spanning 14 games in the Championship, although they did pick up a point on their last trip away from Hillsborough at Watford. 3-0 reverse against Derby County a week ago shows the true reality of the situation though, and this looks to be another game in which they will lose comfortably.

Second Prediction For Ipswich Town vs Sheffield Wednesday – Over 2.5 Goals – 8/15

Ipswich are middle of the road when it comes to games that have seen at least 3 goals, with 52% of their fixtures achieving this feat. However, this does rise slightly to 55% at Portman Road.

It’s worth noting that only 1 of the Tractor Boys’ last 5 home games has been a high scoring affair, although that was the recent thumping of Coventry. Since then, they did pick up a narrow 1-0 win over Stoke City, but this should be a much easier affair.

Unsurprisingly, Sheffield Wednesday’s lowly position means they rank high in this market. Four of their last 6 outings have seen them concede 3 times, which includes a 3-1 defeat at Southampton in November.

Third Prediction For Ipswich Town vs Sheffield Wednesday – Both Teams To Score – No – 4/6

Ipswich do rank quite high in this market and have scored and conceded in 62% of their games. This figure does drop considerably at Portman Road though to 45%.

The Tractor Boys have also kept 4 clean sheets in their last 5 home games. Only Watford have found a way through their back line during this timeframe, whilst Kieran McKenna’s side have kept clean sheets against West Bromwich Albion, Wrexham, Coventry City and Stoke City.

Meanwhile, Sheffield Wednesday have been involved in games where both teams have scored in half of their league fixture so far. Interestingly, this figure does rise to 67% when away from Hillsborough though.

The Owls did score when they travelled to Watford in their last away outing. However, they did fail to find the back of the net in recent trips to Millwall and West Brom.

Full Preview Of The Game: Last Results And Head-To-Head:

After winning just 3 of their opening 10 games, Ipswich have started to find their feet. A 3-0 defeat to Charlton Athletic towards the end of October kick started a 6-game unbeaten run, which came to an end at struggling Oxford United (2-1).

The Tractor Boys followed that with a 1-1 draw in September’s rearranged fixture with Blackburn Rovers. However, they responded with their best performance of the season so far with an excellent 3-0 victory over runaway league leaders Coventry City.

Kieran McKenna’s side coped with the visit of fellow promotion contenders Stoke City by securing a narrow 1-0 triumph, but do head into this game on the back of a disappointing result. They visited Leicester City last weekend, where they stumbled to a 3-1 loss.

Sheffield Wednesday continue to hurtle towards League One. Their only league win of the season remains a 2-0 triumph against Portsmouth at Fratton Park in September.

Although the remainder of this campaign is widely considered a write-off amongst supporters, they are still in the midst of a 14-game winless run. Their young squad has just 1 point to show from their last 6 outings, which came in the 1-1 draw with Watford.

The Owls only other outing this month came last Friday when they welcomed Derby County to Hillsborough. However, they were easily brushed aside, losing 3-0.

Ipswich will be hoping to repeat the last time Wednesday visited Portman Road, where they ran out 6-0 winners in March 2024. The Suffolk-based side are unbeaten in their last 4 meetings against the Owls, with their last defeat coming in 2022.

Overall, there isn’t much to separate the 2 teams over the years. The Tractor Boys have won 22 of the previous 59 clashes, with Sheffield Wednesday winning 21. The pair have played out 16 draws, the last of which was in 2023.
