‘He’ll be sacked in a week!’ – These fans react as Oldham Athletic strengthen backroom staff

Struggling League Two outfit Oldham Athletic have appointed John Dreyer as their new assistant head coach.

The experienced campaigner previously worked with Latics boss Dino Maamria at Stevenage and Preston and will bring a wealth of experience to the Boundary Park set up.

The fifty-six-year-old moved into management at Maidenhead United in 2003 following a distinguished playing career in which he clocked up over five hundred appearances with a host of different clubs including Luton Town, Bradford City and Oxford United.

Dreyer will need all that experience to help Maamria turn around the fortunes of the Latics who are currently twenty-first in league Two and lost their last game 6-1 at Mansfield Town.

Maamria was delighted with the appointment when he spoke to the club’s official website. He said: ‘John is a person I have worked with over the years and trust.’

‘He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience and joined my team last week. He is fully committed in helping me create a winning team the town can be proud of.’

Judging by the reaction to the news on social media the pair have got their work cut out at Oldham. By his own admission, Maamria knows the squad is limited, and its also apparent the disconnect between the club and its supporters continues to widen under the unpopular ownership of Abdallah Lemsagam.

Many fans feel the partnership is destined to fail under the trigger happy chairman with some feeling a miracle is needed to improve the team.

Here is a selection of responses to the appointment of a Dreyer, affectionately know as ‘Tumble’ to his friends.
