Four free agents Oxford boss could be looking at for midfield cover after latest injury setback

David Jones

TuborgLight – Own work

Jones was released by Sheffield Wednesday at the end of last season after making only two appearances in 2018/19. He previously made over sixty outings for the Owls in his first couple of seasons at the club before falling out of favour. He was strongly linked with a move to League Two Grimsby Town in the summer, but nothing materialised with Jones turning down the offer of a contract.

The much-travelled schemer started his career in the Old Trafford youth set-up before spending the majority of his time in the Championship with clubs such as Blackburn, Burnley, Preston, Wigan and Wolves, where he was part of Mick McCarthy’s side that won the Championship title.

In total, Jones has three hundred and seventy-one league appearances to his name, including over one hundred in the Premier League.

He is hungry to play, having outlined recently the mental health challenges of staying fit and ready for action with no game to look forward to on a Saturday.

He is currently training with his old club Burnley in a bid to keep fit and available, and at thirty-four he may still have something to offer in League One.
