Speculation over the future of experienced Bolton Wanderers defender David Wheater continues with the latest tweet by a journalist suggesting he is ‘talking’ with Oldham Athletic.
Alan Nixon is usually a reliable source of transfer information, and when asked if Oldham were interested in the former Premier League defender he claimed they were in talks.

This news comes after speculation linking the central defender to EFL newcomers Salford City went quiet after the thirty-two-year-old was spotted back in training at Bolton.
However, Bolton’s future remains uncertain, and Wheater is part of a group of players who released a statement last week claiming they hadn’t been paid for twenty weeks. Nixon suggests this is the reason for Wheater not surprisingly wanting to move on.

The experienced campaigner has been with Bolton for eight and a half years, making two hundred and thirty-eight appearances since his £2.3 million move from Middlesborough in 2011.
With his family settled in the area, Wheater’s prefered option was to stay at Bolton, but with the club in such a financial mess it is looking increasingly likely he will join the exodus of players leaving the University of Bolton Stadium, with a local destination likely.
Our View
Wheater could still do an excellent job on League One, so if Oldham manage to persuade him to drop to League Two, it would be a tremendous signing.
His wages will be high, but the Oldham owners do love ‘a name’, and this signing would fit the bill with Wheater once considered a future England centre half when he broke through at Middlesborough.
It would be a real coup if he ended up at Boundary Park.
