Bolton Wanderers captain David Wheater is to hold talks with Salford City today and looks set to sign for the Ammies after deciding against a move to Scotland as reported by the Bolton News.
Wheater was in talks with Kilmarnock who can offer Europa League football after their outstanding campaign in 2018/19, but the report claims the deal has faltered due to the thirty-two-year-olds reluctance to move his family north of the border and Salford boss Graham Alexander has stepped in to try and persuade Wheater his future lies closer to home.
The former Middlesborough defender’s prefered option was to stay at Bolton, but the club has not been able to give him any assurances over a new contract until the proposed takeover over of the financially stricken club is complete according to the report.
The experienced campaigner has been with Bolton for eight and a half years and has made two hundred and thirty-eight appearances for the Trotters since his £2.3 million move from Teesside in 2011.
The report claims ambitious Salford hijacked the move to Scotland with the player on the road to Kilmarnock to discuss terms yesterday.
Our View
Wheater has spent the majority of his career in the Premier League and Championship and was considered a future England centre-back when he made his breakthrough at Middlesborough.
His wages will be high for League Two, but that won’t be a problem for the heavily backed Ammies.
It would be an eye-catching signing for Salford, even at thirty-two, the imposing 6ft 5in defender is still far too good for League Two.
