Northampton Town close in on deal for 23-year-old

Northampton Town are thought to be closing in on the capture of Charlie Goode, who is set to leave Scunthorpe United as reported by the Grimsby Telegraph.

Goode joined Scunthorpe in 2015 from non-league side Hendon, having previously represented Hayes, Hadley and Harefield. In his youth he was on the books of Fulham but was released at 15.

He has never settled into a rhythm with the Iron, making 50 starts in his four-year spell with the club. He was part of a shaky defence that conceded lots of goals in the early part of last season, a contributing factor in their relegation from League One.

He’s no stranger to Northampton having moved there on loan in January. He made 17 League Two appearances as Keith Curle battled to turn their season around after a similarly shaky start under Dean Austin.

It’s reported Goode has not been pictured with the Scunthorpe squad on their pre-season jaunt to La Manga and it appears he is the signing set to replace Aaron Pierre, who left Sixfields last week for League One Shrewsbury.

Our View

One man’s trash is another man’s treasure. it’s a popular saying but in football, it is very true. a player cast aside by one club can be a big influence for another.

Goode is only 23-years-old and has plenty to learn, but four years in League One at that age points to him being a competent player.

Northampton are ambitious and hoping for a top seven finish this season, something Goode’s experience could help deliver. Scunthorpe fans won’t be impressed if he turns out to be a star at Sixfields.
