Bury exodus continues as defender joins League Two side

Chris Stokes has quit Bury and moved to ambitious League Two side Stevenage, as reported by The Comet.

The 28-year-old left-back only joined the Gigg Lane outfit last summer, but after a turbulent season in which they were promoted but struggled to pay players, he’s quit the club.

He served his 14-day notice and has now penned a deal with Dino Maamria’s promotion hopefuls. They only missed out on a top seven spot on the final day of the season and have already begun recruiting well for the upcoming campaign.

He arrives at Broadhall Way boasting back-to-back League Two promotions. The first was achieved under Mark Robins at Coventry in 2018 after they beat Exeter City in the play-off final.

Last season he helped guide the Shakers to second place in League Two, despite their troubles off the field. He made more than 40 appearances for Bury as they finished behind title-winners Lincoln City.

Stokes also counts Bolton, Forest Green Rovers and Crewe amongst his former employers.

Our View

Stokes might have played plenty of matches for Bury last season, but there were times when he looked a liability. They drafted in Scott Wharton on loan to play on the left side of the three-man defence after Stokes began to lose form.

That said, the Shakers need players and to lose another player, hot on the heels of Nicky Adams, Jay O’Shea, Nicky Maynard and Danny Mayor, will be a huge blow.

Stevenage fans have every right to be hopeful of another push towards the top seven with this experienced capture.
