‘Not much to be excited about’ – These fans react as Mansfield Town bag 32-year-old

Mansfield Town announced the capture of a ‘proven goalscorer’ yesterday as they flew former Bury striker Nicky Maynard out to Portugal to pen a deal with the club.

Posing with chief executive Carolyn Radford, Maynard put pen to paper on a deal with the Stags which sees them complete a forward line of Andy Cook and Maynard. Between the two they hit over 30 goals last season in League One and League Two.

Manager John Dempster is delighted with the signing, saying; “We are delighted to welcome Nicky to the football club. He comes with great experience and is of a real pedigree.

“Once the CEO [Carolyn Radford] finalised this deal with his representatives, I was impressed with the football questions Nicky asked about our new campaign.”

Maynard started out at Crewe Alexandra, scoring 35 goals in 67 matches before being transferred to Bristol City for £2.25m.

He scored 46 goals in 131 appearances for the Robins, which attracted the attention of West Ham United in January 2012. He struggled for form with the Hammers, making just 17 before being signed by Cardiff City for £2.5m.

Most recently he’s been with Wigan Athletic, MK Dons and Aberdeen before joining Bury last summer. Fans of some of his former clubs are amongst those offering opinions on the move on Twitter this morning.
