Sunderland contract rebel returns to pre-season training

Sunderland’s contract rebel Elliot Embleton has returned to pre-season training, despite uncertainty over his immediate future with the club.

As reported by the Sunderland Echo, the youngster has joined the rest of the squad on their first day back at the Academy of Light. they had an extra week off compared to many clubs after stretching their season until late May, where they found only disappointment at Wembley.

Embleton wasn’t part of that late push towards promotion, he spent time on loan at Grimsby Town, impressing enough to win the PFA Player of the Month for December. His form convinced Jack Ross to put a two-year deal on the table, but as yet it isn’t signed.

The report suggests he’s wanting assurances about playing time, although he has edged closer to the first team with fellow central midfielder Lee Cattermole leaving the club.

A hamstring injury cut his loan at Blundell Park short, but he excelled with regular football and is sure to want time on the pitch to prove his worth.

Our View

Embleton impressed at Blundell Park. we saw him a couple of times in action and he offered a goal threat, but was composed and assured on the ball too.

He fitted in nicely with Michael Jolley’s ethos at the club and is understood to have thoroughly enjoyed being around a senior dressing room every week.

He’s got a big decision to make now. even if Ross assures him playing time, he’s unlikely to start ten matches for the Black Cats. would a League Two move be the catalyst for his rapid development?

We think so.
