Cardiff City have signed Newport County goalkeeper Joe Day on a two-year deal.
Day turned down the offer of a new contract to stay at Rodney Parade after his contract expired with the Exiles this summer.
The ‘keeper made two-hundred and forty-one appearances for County after initially joining from Peterborough United on loan in the summer of 2014 before signing permanently in January 2015.
The twenty-eight-year-old was County’s longest-serving player, and his final appearance came in last month’s League Two play-off final defeat to Tranmere Rovers at Wembley.
Speaking to the club’s official website Exiles boss, Michael Flynn said: ‘Joe has been a tremendous player for this football club on, and off the pitch, his consistency and work ethic has got him this move.’
‘I would like to personally thank Joe for everything he has done here at Newport County AFC.’
Exile fans feared that Day would be leaving after the club signed former Millwall keeper Tom King on a two-year contract earlier this month and they have now been proved correct.
Our View
Joe Day will be a big miss for Exile fans who will be disappointed that he’s left especially on a free transfer.
However, after four and a half years of excellent service, few will begrudge him his move to the Championship.
Cardiff have got themselves a good ‘keeper coming into his prime, but it remains to be seen if he will make the first-team.
It is a big step up, and much will depend on the future of current number one Neil Etheridge.
