Brighton are poised to sign Portsmouth defender Matt Clarke in a deal thought to be worth more than £3 million according to the Daily Mail.
The twenty-two-year-old centre-back was the club’s Player of the Year last season, making sixty-appearances as the club lifted the EFL Trophy and reached the League One play-off semi-finals.
Clarke has one year left on his current deal which he signed in 2018. He joined Pompey initially on-loan from Ipswich Town in 2015 and has made one-hundred-and seventy-five appearances for the South Coast club chipping in with nine goals.
His colossal form last season and Pompey’s failure to win promotion immediately fuelled speculation he was leaving Fratton Park with a Championship club the likely destination.
It now appears the Premier League beckons for Clarke, with the Mail reporting the Seagulls technical director Dan Ashworth and new boss Graham Potter are confident of closing in on a deal for the sought after defender.
Our View
We have always rated Clarke and it looks like Brighton have their man if the report is accurate.
He is a very good defender who will only get better and is now too good for League One.
Some Pompey fans were hopeful he would stay, but a move to the Premier League is difficult to turn down.
They can console themselves with £3 million to invest in the squad for next season and a sustained push for automatic League One promotion.
