Bristol City have largely been a second and third-tier side for much of their history, and their successes come in those divisions. They are one-time champions in the Second Division back in 1906, with the following season seeing The Robins reach the FA Cup final. They have been crowned the champions of the third tier four times. Bristol City History

Bristol City were founded in 1894, originally named as Bristol South and joined the Southern League in 1897, when they changed their name to Bristol City. They merged with Bedminster FC at the turn of the century and would move to Ashton Gate in 1904. In 1901, City joined the Football League, making them only the third Southern club after Arsenal and Luton Town to enter the competition.

They would enter the First Division in 1906 with a record-breaking points tally and would immediately make an impact at the pinnacle of the football pyramid, finishing second in the league and reaching the FA Cup final in 1909, losing to Manchester United. They would be relegated just before football was suspended for World War One and then would be a regular in the Second Division, but once more would be relegated into the Third Division by the late 1930s.

The post-war period saw them return to the second tier bar a 10-year spell in the third tier. They would get back into the top flight, but The Robins plummeted down the leagues with three relegations in a row. City began their slow climb from that point, becoming a Third Division-Second Division yo-yo club with four third tier titles and three EFL Trophy wins, making them the most successful team in the history of that competition.

City have made themselves Championship regulars in recent years and are gradually improving, trying to finally make a return to the top flight for the first time since 1980.
