Lincoln City Boss Refuses to Join the Hype Train

Lincoln City head coach Michael Skubala is refusing to get carried away after his team moved level on points with League One leaders Stockport County on Saturday.

The Imps have enjoyed an excellent opening third to the season and currently look on course to launch a serious promotion challenge. They have been in and around the play-off positions almost from the off, mainly thanks to losing just 1 of their opening 10 games.

It was this form that saw Skubala crowned League One Manager of the Month in September, but the curse that is so often attributed to that well and truly struck in October. They began the month with a 1-0 home defeat against Exeter City before recovering to beat then-league leaders Stevenage by the same scoreline.

Another 1-0 reverse followed, this time at Leyton Orient, although a 0-0 draw with Bradford City was viewed as a decent result. However, they followed that with a dreadful showing at Rotherham United, eventually losing 3-0.

Imps Take Advantage Of International Break

Lincoln comfortably progressed to the next round of the EFL Trophy last week when they topped their group following a 2-0 victory at Barnsley. With the remainder of the top 6 out of action last weekend due to international call-ups, the visit of Doncaster Rovers represented a glorious opportunity to cement their promotion ambitions and recover their poor league form.

Skubala’s team were excellent in the first half, although entered the break with only Francis Okoronkwo’s header to show for their efforts. The Yorkshire team pulled themselves back into the game in the 70th minute through Brandon Hanlon, although parity lasted just a minute when Rovers’ defender Robbie Gotts turned the ball into his own net.

The East Midlands-based outfit found themselves under serious pressure in the last quarter of the game, but saw it out to move level on points with the leaders.

Skubala Refusing To Get Carried Away

The Imps have been a regular fixture in League One since earning promotion from League Two in 2019. They made the play-offs in 2021, only to lose in the final at Wembley Stadium to Blackpool.

Lincoln haven’t appeared in England’s second tier since the early 1960s but will feel they have a glorious opportunity to take that leap this season. Although supporters are beginning to get excited, Skubala insists he isn’t thinking of what could happen in May just yet. Speaking to BBC Radio Lincolnshire, the former Leeds United coach said:

“It’s great for fans to get excited and they can really enjoy it.

“But my job is to keep level and focused. The player know that as well, so let the fans enjoy it.

“We just have to keep to our processes. We have great players, great coaching staff and great people around the club.

“We just have to keep churning out the three points as much as possible.”

Continuing, the head coach admitted that it was a hard-fought win but praised his ‘special squad’:

“I loved us first half, I thought we were amazing. We looked exciting.

“In the second half we maybe went a bit safe and let them back in and they scored.

“But the character to come back and get that second goal – this is a special group and they dig deep.”

Lincoln return to action this weekend when they travel to mid table Wycombe Wanderers.
