Lincoln City Boss Outlines Plan After Recent Poor Form

Lincoln City head coach Michael Skubala insists his team have a huge opportunity to turn a corner over the next week after slumping to another defeat yesterday.

The Imps enjoyed an excellent first couple of months of the campaign, losing just once in their opening 10 games. This saw them become a regular feature in the top 6 in League One.

A run of 3 successive victories in September saw Skubala crowned Manager of the Month and the 3-0 win over Peterborough United indicated that this was a team on the verge of a serious promotion challenge. However, the curse attributed with the award has struck since.

Lincoln began October with a home defeat against Exeter City, although recovered to record a narrow win over then-league leaders Stevenage. They’ve picked up just 1 point since though, culminating in a horrid showing yesterday where they lost 3-0 at Rotherham United.

Lincoln Handed Rotherham Lesson

Having entered this game on the back of an FA Cup first round defeat at League Two outfit Salford City, the short trip to South Yorkshire represented an opportunity to instil a bit of optimism into the supporters. A 0-0 draw with Bradford City in their last league outing was a decent result by all accounts, but 1 league goal in 4 showings was a poor return.

The tone was set early doors when Lincoln goalkeeper let a long range effort from Reece James slip in after just 10 minutes. Just after the half hour mark, the Millers doubled their advantage through Ar’jany Martha.

Although the East Midlands-based outfit showed glimpses that they could get back into the game, it was no surprise when Denzel Hall added a third in the second half. Eventually, Lincoln left the AESSEAL New York Stadium with their biggest defeat of the season so far.

Skubala Looking To Bounce Back

At full time, a clearly frustrated Skubala was at a loss as to what has happened to his team in recent weeks. Results elsewhere mean they are still in the play-off positions, but only on goal difference.

They travel to Barnsley on Tuesday night in the EFL Trophy, a competition where their passage into the knockout stages is virtually assured. Doncaster Rovers then visit the LNER Stadium next week in what must be viewed as a must win game.

Speaking to the media, the head coach admitted this is a big week as he aims to get back on track:

“We’ve got two games coming up in the next week. Tuesday will be an opportunity for some of the lads to show what they can do again and hopefully some of them will take their chance.

“Then we have a huge game against Doncaster Rovers at home. We’re looking forward to being back in front of our own fans and it is a big game for us.

“Football can change quickly. We have to do more and keep moving forward, and next week we have a big opportunity to put it right.”

With all of the teams above them not playing next weekend due to international call-ups, Lincoln could remarkably move to the top of League One with a win next weekend.
