Saddlers’ Big Gamble: Roofe’s Short-Term Deal Could Make or Break the Season

Walsall have announced the signing of former Rangers striker Kemar Roofe on a short-term contract, which will run until January 2026.

With the signing confirmed, the striker is available for selection for today’s home game against Colchester United.

Roofe Returns Home For Promotion Bid

Kemar Roofe was born in Walsall and began his career in the Midlands with West Bromwich Albion before embarking on a journey through the lower divisions.

The 32-year-old enjoyed loans in Iceland with Vikingur Reykjavik and in the Football League with Northampton Town, Cheltenham Town, and today’s opponents before finding a permanent home at Oxford United.

Roofe scored 31 goals for Oxford and assisted 14 more, including a career high 17 during the 2015-16 campaign, before moving to the Championship with Leeds United.

A short stint in Belgium with Anderlecht followed before a return to Britain with Scottish giants Rangers.

The striker was part of the Rangers squad that ended Celtic’s quest for 10 in a row before a short spell at Derby County. Since leaving Pride Park in July, the Jamaican international had been without a club before putting pen to paper at the Bescot Stadium.

Striker Thrilled With Full Circle Moment

Now, with over 100 career goals to his name, Roofe returns to his hometown club with a contract until January, and he is delighted.
“I’m really happy to have signed for Walsall.”

“It’s my hometown club, so it means that little bit more to me and I feel even more at home now having built relationships at the training ground – the staff and players have been amazing with me, and I just can’t wait to get stuck in and help the team and the club achieve its goals.”

“My football journey probably started at Walsall l when I was five – I’ve got pictures of me at the Pallet-Track Bescot Stadium doing the penalty shootout at halftime so to be able to remember that moment and kind of do a full circle is amazing so hopefully I’ll be able to do what I did back then and score some goals for the Saddlers.”

“I spoke with the gaffer at length and he’s given me lots of confidence – he’s told me to bring what I usually do with my quality and experience and help the team push forward. I’m excited to see what the future brings, and I just can’t wait to get started.”

Saddlers’ Boss Delighted With Extra Option

Walsall boss Mat Sadler is delighted to have added Roofe to his striking options as the club prepares for the hectic Christmas period.

“I’m really pleased that the deal’s over the line.”

“Everyone knows Kemar’s name in English football because he’s a fantastic striker and has been throughout his career.”

“He’s still very, very hungry to achieve things, and he’s only 32, so there’s loads left in the tank, which is exciting from my point of view.”

Sadler already has the likes of Aaron Pressley and on-loan Daniel Kanu to pick from up front, but he is delighted to add the experienced frontman to his squad.

“It’s another really good option for us at that top end of the pitch and something that we all know we wanted, that extra body in the building, and hopefully Kemar can continue to show what a great career he’s had.”

“He’s a great guy, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed working with him so far, and I look forward to working with him further.”
