Pundit Makes Norwich City Managerial Candidate Admission

Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman has admitted he understands why Jon Dahl Tomasson would be an attractive option for Norwich City.

Back in the summer of 2024, the Canaries believed they had pulled off a coup by bringing in the highly rated Danish coach Johannes Hoff Thorup on a 3-year deal. After the departure of David Wagner, it was believed that the 2024/25 campaign would be viewed as one of transition, allowing Thorup to build a team capable of making a return to the Premier League.

There’s no getting away from the fact that last season was underwhelming. They were never in danger of either challenging for promotion or relegation, but they still opted to dismiss Thorup with just 2 games remaining.

Eventually, Liam Manning arrived through the door. After his exploits at Bristol City, expectations were high. However, his tenure proved to be an unmitigated disaster, and he was sacked last weekend after a 12-game winless run was extended by a 2-1 defeat against Leicester City.

Norwich In Midst Of Extensive Search

Norwich entered the current international break 23rd in the Championship and without a win since the end of August. Their next fixture sees them travel to Birmingham City on November 22nd, although it is still unclear whether the new boss will be through the door by then.

It was reported earlier this week that a number of interviews have taken place with potential candidates. This is said to include the recently departed former Southampton boss Will Still, Gary O’Neil and ex-Blackburn Rovers manager Jon Dahl Tomasson.

It’s also believed there was heavy interest in Russell Martin, who made over 300 appearances for the club as a player. However, it has now been stated that both Still and Martin are out of the running.

Goodman Understands Tomasson ‘Attraction’

Jon Dahl Tomasson was perhaps a surprise when it was revealed that he had held talks with the East Anglian-based outfit. The 49-year-old does have Championship experience with Blackburn, although his time at Ewood Park certainly had its fair share of ups and downs.

He joined the 1995 Premier League champions in 2022 and enjoyed an excellent debut campaign, narrowly missing out on a place in the play-offs. The 2023/24 season started reasonably well and by the end of November, they were once again on the fringes of the top 6.

Friction off the pitch ultimately led to him leaving Lancashire, with an announcement made in February 2024 that the decision had been made by mutual consent. Less than a month later, he was appointed manager of the Sweden national team.

A legend of neighbours Denmark, Tomasson’s time at the Blågult ended in October following a 1-0 defeat against Kosovo which ultimately left their World Cup qualification hopes hanging by a thread. This was despite possessing the talent of the likes of Alexander Isak, Viktor Gyokeres, Anthony Elanga, Dejan Kulusevski and Lucas Bergvall.

Still, Don Goodman still believes he could be a good option for Norwich, telling Football League World:

“I know Jon Dahl Tomasson has been interviewed for the Norwich vacancy, and I can understand why it’s a club that would hold an attraction for him.

“I don’t think he left Blackburn Rovers on the best of terms. I think it felt like he engineered a move out.

“But, having said all that, he would be one of a number of candidates.

“Do I think he’d be a good appointment? I thought Russell Martin would be a good appointment at Rangers, I thought Will Still would be a good appointment at Southampton. You just never truly know.

“But, it’s an attractive job for somebody, and I understand why he’d be on the list.”
