Middlesbrough are reportedly closing in on a new head coach, with former Wolves boss Gary O’Neil now weighing up interest from both Teesside and East Anglia as the managerial merry-go-round gathers pace.
O’Neil, who has already held preliminary talks with Middlesbrough following Rob Edwards’ departure, has also been linked with the vacant post at Norwich City. But former EFL midfielder Adrian Clarke believes there is only one sensible choice for the 42-year-old — the Riverside.

‘Boro Offer Stability, Norwich Offer Problems’
Clarke, speaking on the What The EFL podcast, argued that Middlesbrough’s structure and ownership make them a far more attractive prospect than their struggling Championship rivals.
“If I am Gary O’Neil, I am much more interested in the Middlesbrough job than I am the Norwich job,” he said. “Stable ownership, a team that is pretty solid at the top end of the division. That feels obvious to me.”
Norwich’s season has unravelled quickly after a summer of heavy recruitment failed to deliver results. The Canaries have lost 7 of their first 15 home games, leaving them hovering near the bottom of the Championship.
Sporting director Ben Knapper has come under growing scrutiny for recruitment decisions, and with Liam Manning dismissed earlier this month, the next appointment could prove pivotal in deciding the club’s trajectory.
By contrast, Middlesbrough’s board have maintained consistency and clarity throughout the campaign. Sitting 2nd in the Championship table and chasing promotion, the club’s long-term model under chairman Steve Gibson continues to draw admiration.

For O’Neil, who spent four years as a Boro player between 2007 and 2011, the appeal of returning to familiar surroundings with a stable project appears clear.

Managerial Tug-of-War Intensifies
Despite his sacking by Wolves in late 2024, O’Neil’s stock remains high after guiding the Midlands side to Premier League safety against the odds. He has since turned down multiple offers, waiting for what he considers the right opportunity. Sources close to the situation suggest he remains open to discussions with both clubs, though Middlesbrough’s current league position could tip the balance in their favour.
Norwich, meanwhile, face a crucial two-week period to find Manning’s replacement before returning to action against Oxford United. With the squad struggling for cohesion and confidence, whoever takes charge will inherit a demanding dressing room and a fanbase short on patience. As Clarke bluntly put it:
“I just think it is a bad collection of players. Any manager would have his work cut out with this group.”
Adding intrigue to the situation, Southampton remain in ongoing talks with O’Neil as they look to replace Will Still. The south coast club’s involvement ensures the 42-year-old is unlikely to rush a decision, even as Middlesbrough and Norwich press ahead with their search for clarity before the international break concludes.
For now, the managerial race looks set to define the next phase of the Championship season. Whether O’Neil chooses the stability of Middlesbrough, the challenge of Norwich, or the lure of Southampton, his next move could reshape the promotion and relegation picture in both divisions.
