Sheffield Wednesday are in ongoing discussions with Manchester United over the loan future of teenage defender Harry Amass, whose breakthrough season at Hillsborough has made him a key figure in Henrik Pedersen’s plans.
The 17-year-old full-back has played every minute of Wednesday’s Championship campaign since his debut in September, quickly establishing himself as one of the club’s standout performers.
His current loan deal includes a January break clause, allowing United to reassess his development, but both clubs are keen to extend the agreement until the end of the season.
Harry Amass is the 3rd-youngest goalscorer in the Championship this season.

Talks Ongoing as Pedersen Pushes for Extension
Owls manager Henrik Pedersen confirmed that discussions between the 2 clubs took place over the weekend following Amass’s goal in the defeat to Southampton. The teenager’s performances have drawn praise from across the Championship, and Pedersen remains adamant that the England youth international should stay in South Yorkshire to continue his progress.
Amass, who joined on deadline day, admitted that while a final decision rests with Manchester United, he is “really enjoying” life at Hillsborough.
“It’s about going back as a better player,” he said. “It’s all about helping the team, but doing that helps me as well. I feel like I’m improving every day, and the loan is really helping.”
Wednesday’s financial situation meant the deal was only possible because United agreed to cover the player’s wages and loan costs. However, with a preferred bidder expected soon in the club’s ongoing takeover talks, the structure of the agreement could be revisited in January.

Pedersen and United Aligned on Development Plan
Manchester United loans manager Jonny Evans has been in regular contact with Pedersen’s staff and continues to monitor Amass’s progress closely. Evans and Pedersen are said to share a clear vision for the youngster’s development, with both prioritising regular senior minutes over a mid-season recall.

Amass also spoke of his trust in Pedersen, crediting the Dane’s passion and support as key factors in his decision to join Wednesday.
“I spoke to the gaffer a few times and trusted him from the start,” he said. “He showed a lot of passion and care for me, and that’s one of the big reasons I came here.”
Having now scored his first senior goal and become a consistent starter, Amass has shown maturity beyond his years in a struggling side. While the Owls remain near the bottom of the Championship table, the teenager’s commitment and consistency have been a rare positive in a turbulent season.
With January approaching, all parties are hopeful that a resolution will allow Amass to see out the campaign at Hillsborough. For Sheffield Wednesday, securing his stay would not only strengthen their survival bid but also signal stability amid wider uncertainty off the pitch.
