Rangers Plot Stunning Raid On Southampton For Star Man

Southampton is reportedly considering selling one of its star performers, and new Rangers boss Danny Rohl is interested in taking him.

Saints Could Cash In On International Midfielder

Northern Ireland international Charles was a key component in Wil Still’s side, performing well in 12 Championship matches before suffering a hamstring injury that is set to keep him out until December.

Reports are now suggesting that the Saints could be open to selling the 22-year-old, cashing in before his contract runs out. Charles, a £10 million signing from Manchester City, has 18 months left on his deal and is interesting his former manager.

The midfielder spent a season on loan with Sheffield Wednesday under Danny Rohl last season, winning the club’s player of the year award. Charles appeared in 43 of the Owls’ 46 league matches before returning to Southampton upon their relegation from the Premier League.

The 31-cap international continued his fine Championship form on his return to St. Mary’s before his season was paused through injury. It is difficult to imagine the new manager being willing to sell a player of Charles’s ability, but if no new contract is forthcoming, then those decisions may be made by those above.

Interest In Charles Thought To Be High

Rangers have moved up to 4th in the Scottish Premiership since Rohl took over from former Southampton boss Russell Martin, winning all 3 of his league matches in charge.

The German is looking to put his stamp on his squad as the January transfer window looms. Charles would represent a significant outlay for the Glasgow side, and they are not the only ones with a reported interest.

Southampton’s divisional rivals, Sheffield United, also hold an interest in the midfielder, but they currently sit 8 points below the Saints in the Championship table. As Charles, injury permitting, impresses in the second tier, the Manchester-born player would surely have his eye on a move up the divisions.

That would rule out the Blades, but it could make a move to a club the size of Rangers a possibility. However, the blue half of Glasgow has not spent more than the £7.5 million they paid Everton for Youssef Chermiti in January since the early 2000s.

To sign Charles, they would have to go beyond that figure, as Southampton would look to recoup the fee they paid Manchester City for his services.
