Leyton Orient have confirmed that Theo Archibald has signed a short-term contract until the end of the season, returning the winger to the registered squad after a significant knee injury lay-off.
The 27-year-old has been out of competitive action since February 2024 after suffering a serious knee problem that halted his progress during the club’s League One campaign. His new deal includes an option to extend for a further season, dependent on a specific appearance target set by the club.

Archibald Begins Next Phase Of His Return
The club confirmed that Archibald will initially be available for their U21 side and behind closed doors friendlies as he works toward full match fitness. Director of football Martin Ling outlined the next steps, noting that structured minutes at development level are essential before the winger can challenge for a place in the first-team squad. It marks the first formal step in reintroducing him to competitive action after a 20-month absence.
Speaking to club media, Archibald reflected on the emotional strain of his long rehabilitation.
“The last 20 months have been really challenging for me. I have had some really dark moments and I am incredibly grateful for the network of people I have around me.
“Playing for this club again has always been my aim and I never gave up hope. There is still work to do before I can play for the first team again and I will be giving my maximum to everything that is asked of me.

He rejoined Leyton Orient initially on loan from Lincoln City in 2021 before completing a permanent switch the following summer. Across his spell in East London, he has made 117 appearances.
He also contributed 5 goals during their promotion-winning 2022 to 2023 League Two season, becoming a consistent and valued part of the squad prior to his injury.

Orient Hope Experienced Winger Can Boost Squad Options
With Richie Wellens managing a squad that has faced availability issues in recent months, the potential return of a fully fit Archibald later this season offers a timely boost. Although there is no fixed date for a first-team comeback, Orient believe the structure now in place gives the winger the best possible chance of returning at senior level in the months ahead.
Director of football Ling expressed optimism about what the re-registration means for both player and club.
“By signing a contract and being registered as a player again, it allows him to compete for our U21s and in friendlies. The next stage is getting minutes and then, all being well, he should be in contention to earn a place in our first-team squad.”
The decision gives Archibald a clear pathway toward a full return, while Leyton Orient gain an experienced wide option who has already delivered across multiple seasons. His progress over the coming weeks will determine when he can realistically target involvement in League One fixtures.
