Sheffield Wednesday could be handed a vital transfer boost as administrators hold talks with the EFL, potentially paving the way for a move for former Leeds United defender Liam Cooper.
As takeover discussions continue at Hillsborough, there’s renewed optimism among Wednesday fans that the club’s future might finally be stabilising.
The exit of controversial owner Dejphon Chansiri has lifted the atmosphere, with prospective buyers and the promise of recruitment freedom offering light at the end of a difficult tunnel.
Joint administrator Kris Wigfield has confirmed that talks are ongoing with the EFL to ease restrictions that have prevented Sheffield Wednesday from signing players since entering administration.
Cooper seen as key defensive addition
According to The Star’s Alex Miller, Wednesday have held preliminary discussions regarding the possible signing of former Leeds United captain Liam Cooper. The 34-year-old centre-back is currently a free agent after leaving CSKA Sofia earlier this year and is reportedly open to a return to English football.
Cooper spent a decade at Elland Road, amassing over 250 appearances across the Championship and Premier League. His leadership, professionalism and experience could make him an invaluable asset in Wednesday’s fight for survival, especially given the club’s threadbare defensive options under the current restrictions.
During his emotional Leeds farewell, manager Daniel Farke hailed the Scot as a true servant of the club.
“It was a pleasure and a privilege to be allowed to be his manager for the last 12 months. I’ve also played several times against him in his prime.
“What can I say? A fantastic footballer, a fantastic human being, an unbelievable person. He’s a real club legend,” said Farke.

Fresh start for both player and club
For Cooper, the move could represent one final challenge in a rich EFL career that began at Hull City and took him through Chesterfield before his long spell at Leeds. For Wednesday, it would be a statement of intent and a much-needed morale boost as they battle to overturn their deficit at the foot of the table.
Whether or not the EFL allows new signings before January remains to be seen, but administrators remain hopeful that the situation can be resolved swiftly. If clearance is granted, Cooper’s arrival could become one of the first significant moves of the new era at Hillsborough.
As optimism slowly returns to S6, the possibility of pairing off-field stability with an experienced leader on the pitch could finally give Wednesday fans reason to believe the worst is behind them.
