‘Incredibly Ambitious’- Sheffield United Boss Discusses Transfers

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder believes the club have shown ambition and signed the right players in the spell between his sacking and re-appointment, according to a Sheffield Star report.

Wilder returned for a third stint as boss at Bramall Lane after the dismissal of Ruben Selles.

Selection Headaches For Wilder

He may have only had the job for a short spell, but Ruben Selles made his mark in the transfer market as the former boss added no fewer than 14 new faces to the United squad.

The likes of Tyler Bindon and Louie Barry were added early in the window and players such as Japhet Tanganga, Tahith Chong and Danny Ings joined as it drew to a close.

Wilder reiterated the point that the Blades had one of the youngest teams in the division last year, unlike their promotion rivals, and he is pleased to see the type of player brought in added to the squad.

“There had always been, in my opinion, the necessity of signing some of the players the club has signed. And I’ve got to say, I think the club have been incredibly ambitious and put their hand in the pocket in terms of what they’ve done.”

The newly re-appointed boss went on to say that many of the players brought in by his predecessor were either on his radar or players he would have signed.

“Would I have signed Japhet Tanganga? One hundred per cent. If Robbo had gone, would I have signed Ben Mee? One hundred per cent. The club tried to sign Chieo before he went to Luton.”

“I see his career and his profile, and he’s a good Sheffield United player. Chong we all know about, Mark McGuinness we all know about. He played over the road (at Sheffield Wednesday) and did very well for the team down the road. He’s a good player, an experienced Championship player.”

“It’s putting them all together. I would have signed Nils. He was in the system before. They’re good signings that we can develop with our academy players, with players we’ve signed.”

As he mentions, Wilder’s job now is putting the pieces of the jigsaw together and getting the club back to winning ways. The squad is now almost overflowing with first-team options, to the point where the manager’s job come January may be to trim the playing staff.

No one will be surprised should the Blades register their first win today against Charlton Athletic and the Bramall Lane atmosphere is rocking.

United are nine points off those in the playoff spots at present but, with the players he has at his disposal, you wouldn’t put it past Wilder leading another promotion charge.
