Stoke City Brace For Unexpected Defender Interest

Stoke City are resisting a late attempt from Standard Liège to prise away left-back Eric Bocat before the Belgian transfer deadline closes.

The Jupiler Pro League side are pushing to secure the defender on loan with an option to buy, but Stoke have no plans to sanction a deal.

Belgian Side Make Their Move

Reports in Belgium suggested Standard initially pursued Eduard Sobol from Strasbourg before turning their attention to Bocat. Journalist Sacha Tavolieri claims Liège manager Marc Wilmots has identified the 26-year-old as a priority signing, with the club proposing a temporary deal that includes a €2 million purchase clause. Both Bocat and Standard are said to be open to the switch, though Stoke remain firm in their stance.

The Potters, now managed by Mark Robins, are reluctant to weaken their squad so soon after the English window shut. Bocat has featured three times as a substitute this season and remains part of the club’s plans, especially given the demands of a long Championship campaign. Having survived relegation on the final day last season, Stoke’s focus this term is on building stability rather than losing key depth options.

Liège’s interest reflects their own defensive concerns, with current left-backs Alexandro Calut, Boli Bolingoli and Souleyman Doumbia all under contract only until 2026. Bocat’s experience in Belgian football, with Mouscron and Sint-Truiden before his move to England, makes him an attractive option for Wilmots as he seeks reinforcements.

Bocat began his career in France with Dijon and Brest before signing for Lille in 2019, where he made his senior debut in the Coupe de France. After two years at Mouscron, where he endured the club’s financial collapse, he rebuilt his career at Sint-Truiden. His performances there earned him a €1.5 million move to Stoke in June 2024, with a further €500,000 in potential add-ons included in the deal. He went on to make 34 appearances in his debut season as the Potters clung to Championship survival.

Writer’s View

It is easy to see why Standard Liège have identified Eric Bocat, given his consistency in Belgium and availability late in the window. However, Stoke’s refusal to consider a loan reflects their awareness of last season’s struggles and the importance of maintaining defensive depth.

For Bocat, regular minutes are crucial, but in a side aiming to establish a stronger Championship footing, his opportunity may yet come. This feels less like the end of the saga and more like the opening chapter ahead of the winter window.
