Reading Boss Laments ‘Frustrating’ Deadline Day

Reading manager Noel Hunt has confirmed the club are exploring free agent options after a frustrating transfer deadline day.

The Royals completed 12 summer signings, but their only addition on Monday was forward Sean Patton from Derry City, who will initially link up with the Under-21s.

Missed Opportunities

Hunt admitted disappointment at missing out on paid-for transfers and loans as the clock ticked down. Delays with European and Scottish windows complicated potential deals, and one move collapsed at the last minute when a player’s transfer abroad was blocked.

“It was a long day,” Hunt explained. “It’s frustrating but an experience for me, the first time as a manager having to deal with that.”

Despite falling short, Hunt was encouraged by the progress of his squad overall. For the first time in years, he says Reading now have depth across multiple positions, allowing for rotation and competition. The focus has now shifted to securing free agents who can offer further quality.

Plans for the Break

Football operations manager Brian Carey has compiled a list of available players in several positions, with talks set to begin during the international break. Former West Bromwich Albion defender Nathan Ferguson remains on trial with the club’s Under-21s, while Hunt suggested one or two further additions could still arrive if the right fit is found.

“You always want to look at something else to help the squad out,” he said. “We were actively looking all day and trying to get a deal done but it didn’t happen. If there are one or two out there on a free transfer that we can look at, we will.”

Reading will now prepare for their next League One fixture away to Barnsley on 13 September, giving Hunt and his staff time to pursue reinforcements without the pressure of midweek matches. The aim remains to build on a promising start by adding further quality where possible.

Writer’s View

While missing out on targets late in the window will frustrate supporters, Reading’s position is far stronger than in recent years. Hunt has already overseen a large influx of players and now has the foundation of a balanced squad. Turning to free agents is a sensible approach, particularly with financial considerations in mind.

If the Royals can add one or two experienced figures without overextending, they will head into the autumn with momentum intact and the flexibility to cope with injuries or suspensions. The international break has come at the right time for the club to reset and refine their plans.
