Blackburn Rovers Plot Move For Former Watford & West Ham United Man

Blackburn Rovers are considering a move for experienced defender Craig Dawson after his release from Wolverhampton Wanderers, according to Alan Nixon.

The 35-year-old centre-back is available on a free transfer and has emerged as a target for Rovers, who sold Dom Hyam to Wrexham on deadline day.

Dawson on Rovers’ Radar

According to reports, manager Valérien Ismaël is keen to add depth and leadership to his defensive unit. Dawson, who has played more than 500 senior games, would bring proven quality and experience to a squad in transition following Hyam’s departure.

The former Watford and West Ham United defender left Wolves after being frozen out in the latter part of last season. Then-manager Vítor Pereira explained at the time that Dawson did not fit into his vision for the team. Despite this, Dawson featured 61 times for the Midlands side, scoring twice, after joining them in 2023.

Earlier this summer, Birmingham City explored a deal for Dawson before turning to Sheffield United’s Jack Robinson. Blackburn, however, remain in the market for a free agent addition as the transfer window has now closed for permanent and loan moves until January.

Career Experience

Dawson began his career at Rochdale, where his goalscoring from defence quickly attracted attention. He went on to make 225 appearances for West Brom, before spells at Bolton Wanderers, Watford and West Ham. His reliability, aerial strength and leadership qualities have been consistent traits throughout a career that has spanned both the Premier League and Championship.

Blackburn see the defender as an ideal candidate to help stabilise their back line, offering competition and mentoring for younger players. His experience of high-pressure games, including European football with West Ham, is also viewed as a valuable asset for a squad aiming to push towards the top half of the Championship.

Writer’s View

This move would make a great deal of sense for Blackburn. The loss of Hyam left a clear gap in central defence, and with no chance of replacing him until January via the market, free agency is the only option. Dawson’s pedigree and leadership are beyond doubt, even if age means careful management of his minutes.

For a side that has struggled with consistency at the back, adding someone with his know-how could be decisive. If the financial terms are manageable, it is the kind of signing that could quietly transform Rovers’ defensive stability.
