Swansea City Announce Departure

Swansea City have announced that attacker Josh Ginnelly has left the club after his contract was terminated by mutual consent.

The 28-year-old joined the Championship outfit in 2023 after he opted not to take up the offer of a contract extension at Scottish Premiership side Hearts. Initially joining the Edinburgh-based club on loan, he impressed during a three-year stint north of the border, scoring 22 times in 89 appearances.

Committing to a three-year deal at the Swans, he hit the ground running. He scored on his first start for the club in a 1-1 draw against Queens Park Rangers, but disaster struck soon afterwards when he ruptured his Achilles tendon.

This injury ruled the former Lincoln City loanee out of action for 15 months and he eventually returned to the side in January. However, he made just three Championship appearances and wasn’t named in Swansea’s pre-season camp prior to the start of this season.

Ginnelly Becomes Free Agent

Although the forward is back to full fitness, it has been announced that he will depart the Swansea.com Stadium with immediate effect. A short statement on official club platforms confirmed the news:

“Swansea City can confirm Josh Ginnelly has left the club after the parties reached a mutual agreement to terminate his contract.

“The 28-year-old joined the Swans in the summer of 2023, but suffered a ruptured Achilles that kept him sidelined for more than 15 months, limiting him to 12 appearances.

“The club wishes Josh well in his future career.”

Swansea have started the season well, winning two of their opening four fixtures. They return to action after the international break with a home clash against Hull City.

Writer’s View

This is a real shame for Josh Ginnelly, who may feel he never really got a fair crack of the whip at Swansea. His Achilles injury that he suffered just months after arriving means he never really got going and it was clear that he wasn’t going to get the opportunities upon his return. The free agent market is a hot one following the closing of the transfer window but there are sure to be a number of clubs who will be interested in acquiring his services. He may have to drop back down to League One and settle for a short term deal, but that may be the best way to reignite his career.
