Northampton Town manager Kevin Nolan insists he is looking to add further numbers to his squad, despite the transfer window closing yesterday.
It’s already been an exceptionally busy summer for the Cobblers. Attacker Kyle Edwards and goalkeeper Theo Avery have both arrived within the last 24 hours, bringing the number of new faces at Sixfields to 16.
They look to have recruited well though. Their first four games of the season saw them earn just one point, although it is fair to say that their return didn’t match their performances. However, they look to have turned a corner in their past two outings, picking up victories over Exeter City and Leyton Orient.
Nolan Exploring Free Agent Market
The first few weeks after the transfer window normally sees a flurry of activity in the free agent market. Although Nolan has strengthened considerably, he has admitted that he is still keen to add to his squad. Speaking to Northampton Chronicle & Echo, the former Notts County boss stated he is happy with the players that have arrived thus far but they aren’t done yet:
“We’re not finished – recruitment work never stops. Alex (Latimer, head of recruitment) is in today (Tuesday) and we’re looking at all of the lads out of contract and something could well happen with those players. There are some good players in that market who we are monitoring.
“We have already laid some ground work for the January window and we will keep progressing on all fronts and we’re on top of everything. We’re looking at a few players today and we’ll see if there’s anybody that tickles our fancy. We’ll take our time and we won’t be held to ransom because we are looking for a certain type, but if someone comes up, we’ll bite on it and I know the owners will back me.
“But I’m really pleased with where we are at. At the end of the transfer window we have a young, refreshed squad that is very together and it is important we keep that unity.”
Writer’s View
Northampton had an exciting transfer window and despite the high number of new arrivals, it looks as if Nolan has been sensible in his approach. They had a slow start in terms of points gained but it was clear from their performances that it wouldn’t be long before things clicked. This has come to fruition over the past couple of weeks and the early signs suggest they have enough quality to comfortably stay in the division come May. Further additions will only enhance this.
