Swansea City have announced the delayed signing of Ishé Samuels-Smith, on a season-long loan from Chelsea. The left-back signed for Ligue 1 sister club Strasbourg this summer, but has since rejoined the Blues
The 19-year-old was highly-rated at Stamford Bridge, and remains part of Chelsea’s side in a multi-club system, despite signing a five-year deal with Strasbourg this summer. Swansea have now unveiled Samuels-Smith as their latest temporary signing, handing the prospect some vital EFL experience.
Chelsea-Strasbourg Dilemma
In Strasbourg’s Conference League Qualification leg against Brøndy IF, Samuels-Smith was an unused substitute – similarly to a 1-0 win over Metz in the league. With Valentin Barco joining the French side permanently after a successful loan away from Brighton & Hove Albion, the 19-year-old is evidently surplus to Liam Rosenior’s requirements this campaign.
Samuels-Smith has featured heavily for Chelsea’s academy since being poached by the London club from Everton’s development in August 2023. The defender has contributed seven assists and two goals in 34 matches while developing at the Blues, but now enters the Championship as a key prospect.
Internationally, Samuels-Smith has already featured in the youth ranks of England. Featuring predominantly for the England under-17s, the 19-year-old has played in all sides from under-16 to under-19.
Early Thoughts On Swansea’s Prospect
Alan Sheehan, Swansea’s head coach, offered his thoughts on the young defender joining the Welsh side on loan; he analysed what Samuels-Smith will provide for the Swans this season:
“Ishé will provide valuable cover in a position where we have been short of options. He is a hungry young player who is excited to make the most of this opportunity.
“He joins us with considerable pedigree at academy and youth international level, and we are pleased to have him with us.”
The Championship side’s Director of Football also offered his insight and why the Chelsea player was targeted by the recruitment team:
“The need to bolster our options on the left side of defence has been well-documented, and we believe the addition of high-quality cover in Ishé will be important for the season ahead and in allowing us to continue to assess this position ahead of future windows.”
Writer’s View
With Samuels-Smith having a confusing summer from a transfer perspective, it will be nice for the teenager to settle down at Swansea for at least six months. Of course, there will be a recall option in the loan deal, allowing Chelsea to control the defender’s development with the Swans or back at Strasbourg.
Sheehan will be picking up a very talented youngster who will provide great defensive cover and exciting wing-play down the left side of the Swans’ set-up. Josh Tymon has been a mainstay in the Championship side’s lineup for many years, with the left-back now needing competition in a sparse area.
