Peterborough United’s deadline day saw four arrivals, with Wrexham pair Jacob Mendy and Tom O’Connor joining alongside strikers Harry Leonard and Jimmy-Jay Morgan.
Posh have a record of finding top strikers, Ivan Toney the most recent, but this time they’ve had to settle for one on loan, as transfer conditions got tough. Chairman Darragh MacAnthony detailed the strategy behind the business after what he called a “horrendous” start, with one point from six League One matches.
Posh add Wrexham duo after slow start
Speaking on the club’s Posh Plus service, MacAnthony outlined how the late window activity was driven by performance and balance. With just a single point on the board, Peterborough needed ready options who understand winning environments.
Leonard was the only permanent signing on the day, arriving from Blackburn Rovers. MacAnthony described the striker market as challenging, adding that many number nines are retained by top clubs unless available on loan. He explained why Posh moved decisively once a permanent route emerged.
“The striker market is not great. A lot of number nines have been harvested by big clubs and they are not going down the leagues unless they leave on loan
“Harry was on our list, but he was for loan and has had injury issues. We spoke to Sammie Szmodics and we know what a talent he is, but we didn’t want to bring him on loan. If he’s going to be our main guy, then that’s value we’re created for his club. The loan was really cheap, but it was my idea to put a bid in.
“We felt Harry was the one we were waiting for.”
MacAnthony said an “extensive medical” gave confidence to complete the deal for Leonard after injury issues last season and stressed the need for four strikers if Posh opt to play with a front two, to avoid overloading younger forwards.
Chelsea prospect Jimmy-Jay Morgan also arrived, with his youth pedigree and recent senior exposure adding another option in the forward line. Between Leonard’s permanent move and Morgan’s loan, Peterborough have re-stocked in attack to support a tactical reset.
The churn continued in the opposite direction, with Bradley Ihionvien heading out on loan and further exits planned for transfer-listed players into the National League, where business can still be done.

Writer’s View
For a team short on points, Peterborough’s logic is clear: inject versatility and winning habits now, and buy time for the permanent pieces to take root. Mendy and O’Connor address structural gaps straight away, while Leonard and Morgan raise the attacking ceiling. The early weeks will turn on how fast the Wrexham pair settle; if they hit the ground running, the rest of the rebuild can follow at a steadier pace.
