Cambridge United are moving closer to a loan deal for Adam Mayor, but face competition for the Millwall man’s signature.
The U’s, led by former Lions boss Neil Harris, have returned into League Two and got off to a solid start, with ten points from their opening six matches and sit one point outside of the playoffs in this formative stage of the season.
Millwall Exit Likely
According to the Daily Mirror’s EFL correspondent Dan Marsh, Adam Mayor could be set for a loan return to League Two, with Cambridge United named as one team currently in talks with Millwall. Mayor has played just six times for the Championship side since joining from Morecambe in January 2024, and has been largely out of favour at The Den.
The left-back, who can also play much further forward, spent the second half of last season on loan at Bromley, but failed to record a goal or assist for the club in 17 appearances. It is believed that this latest loan has been sanctioned to further Mayor’s development, with the 20-year-old signing a ‘long-term contract’ under previous boss Joe Edwards.
The Lions have already recruited this season at the left-back position, signing Zak Sturge from Chelsea on a permanent deal after a short but promising loan spell at the end of last season. Joe Bryan and Dan McNamara are both alternative options in the full-back position; however, the latter is currently sidelined with an injury.

Writers’ View
Adam Mayor’s opportunities once again look limited at Millwall so it is understandable why a second loan move has been sanctioned by the Championship side. League Two has been a division the 20-year-old has performed in with Morecambe before joining the Lions, and joining Cambridge would see him arrive at an ambitious side looking to bounce back following relegation. Both Zak Bradshaw and Ben Purrington have arrived at the Abbey on free transfers this summer, and now Mayor will be the third addition in the position this summer should Neil Harris’ side beat the competition to get a deal over the line, but could certainly play further forward to support James Brophy following his blistering start to the season.
