Bromley Continue Their EFL Establishment With Convincing Win

Bromley have looked thoroughly well-organised in their opening six matches of the League Two season. A 2-0 win over Harrogate Town took their points tally to 12 and continued an unbeaten start.

A late surge of form towards the end of last campaign saw Andy Woodman’s side miss out on a play-off place. Bromley finished in 11th, but firmly established themselves as competitors in the fourth tier. The former National League side are now looking to go one further, with promotion to League One at the forefront of Woodman’s mind.

Bromley now sit in third place and have faced some dangerous opposition so far. Omar Sowunmi has continued his impressive goalscoring form as a centre-back, with two goals already being contributed against Cheltenham Town and Harrogate. The 29-year-old scored six times across all competitions last campaign and has continued to thrive in a trio with Idris Odutayo as well as newcomer, Kyle Cameron.

Mitchell Pinnock has been a fantastic addition to the League Two side, contributing three assists since a free summer move from Northampton Town.

On the most recent victory against Harrogate, Woodman had this to say about a ‘Jekyll and Hyde’ home tie – with Bromley’s greatest strengths showing in the second half:

“I thought it was a very poor first half, but that said we were into the wind, and that wind kind of reminded me of many games where we’ve had to be tight and not give anything away… battle through the half – which we did. Not a lot of quality, but we huffed and puffed and kept battling.

“Second half we looked more of a goal threat. We looked prettier on the eye. Credit to Harrogate, they’ve had a good start.

“When you’ve got the sort of set pieces we’ve got: the delivery, the quality, the desire in our team – you just know sooner or later one of those is going to drop.”

Writer’s View

Evidently, the second half was a much better performance from Bromley. It proves that Woodman’s side can hold on defensively during rough patches of play, while waiting to punish opponents from a focused and targeted set-piece approach. Pinnock is the perfect specialist for Woodman’s side and a combination with Sowunmi will cause many problems for fourth tier sides as the season goes on.

Sowunmi had six shots this Saturday and is imposing himself as a huge threat this season. This is an obvious continuation in form from last campaign, with teams still unlikely to figure out how to mark the 29-year-old. Woodman could be looking to achieve a play-off place this season if performances remain this resilient.
