Southampton Weighing Up £6.9 Million Summer Swoop

Southampton are weighing up a late summer swoop for Léo Scienza as Heidenheim prepare to listen to offers in the region of €8m (£6.9m).

The Brazilian-Luxembourgian winger has attracted serious attention after an impressive year in Germany, with reports suggesting the Saints are now in a strong position to test the Bundesliga side’s resolve.

Saints Make Their Move

Leonardo Weschenfelder Scienza, known as Léo Scienza, joined Heidenheim in July 2024 after a prolific season at SSV Ulm. The 26-year-old had previously worked his way up through spells at Schalke II and 1. FC Magdeburg, before making his mark in the 3. Liga with Ulm. His rise culminated in a dramatic moment last May when he scored a stoppage-time winner against Elversberg in the relegation play-offs, ensuring Heidenheim’s survival in the Bundesliga.

Scienza has since become a central figure in Frank Schmidt’s side, operating mainly from the left wing. Already this season he has scored three goals in competitive fixtures, including a Conference League strike against BK Häcken and a Bundesliga goal in the victory over Augsburg. His set-piece quality, coupled with his ability to run directly at defenders, has given Heidenheim a valuable creative edge.

German outlet Kicker has confirmed Fabrizio Romano’s report that Southampton are keen on the player, with Heidenheim prepared to negotiate at around €8m to €9m. That valuation represents a major profit on a player signed from the third tier little more than a year ago.

Heidenheim’s Position

While Scienza has been an influential figure, Heidenheim may feel they can afford to cash in after strengthening their squad. The recent arrival of Leart Paçarada from Köln gives Schmidt another left-sided option, with chief executive Holger Sanwald highlighting his delivery and set-piece ability when the deal was announced.

That overlap could provide the Bundesliga club with a safety net, allowing them to move on from Scienza while still retaining attacking balance. The decision will ultimately come down to whether Schmidt and Sanwald believe the financial gain outweighs the sporting risk.

Southampton, meanwhile, continue to look for attacking reinforcements as they bid to return to the Premier League. Manager Will Still has favoured fluid, possession-based football at St Mary’s, and a versatile forward like Scienza fits the profile of the players he has targeted since arriving on the south coast.

Writer’s View

This potential transfer looks like one that could benefit both sides. Heidenheim would be securing a huge return on a player who cost little more than belief in his talent, while Southampton could land a creative, versatile attacker at the peak of his career.

At 26, Scienza is in his prime, with a track record of scoring decisive goals in high-pressure moments. If the Saints are willing to meet the asking price, they would be signing a player who not only strengthens their promotion push but could also thrive should they reach the Premier League.
