Wrexham Set To Green Light Defender Exit

Wrexham defender Dan Scarr looks set for the exit door with several League One clubs showing firm interest.

Reports from SportsBoom suggest Phil Parkinson must move players out before adding further reinforcements to his squad.

League One Sides Monitoring Defender

Promotion-winning centre-back Scarr has slipped down the pecking order at the Racecourse Ground and is free to leave before the window closes. Among those monitoring his situation are his former employers, Plymouth Argyle, who are eager to strengthen defensively following relegation from the Championship last season.

Reading have also emerged as a potential destination, with the Royals in the market for an experienced defender to steady their back line. With Scarr featuring only in the EFL Cup so far this term, the 30-year-old is understood to be keen on a move that will guarantee regular football and the chance to be part of another promotion push.

Parkinson’s Balancing Act

Manager Parkinson is attempting to reshape his squad while maintaining the depth needed for a competitive Championship campaign. Reports have linked Wrexham with a move for Cardiff City captain Calum Chambers, and there is a belief that Scarr could even be used as part of the negotiations to bring him to North Wales.

Scarr, who began his professional career after a spell in non-league with Stourbridge, earned a move to Birmingham City in 2017 but failed to make a first-team appearance. He rebuilt his reputation at Walsall before rejecting fresh terms in 2021 to join Plymouth.

It was at Home Park that he enjoyed the most successful spell of his career to date, playing a central role in Argyle’s 2022/23 double-winning season when they lifted both the League One title and the EFL Trophy.

Writer’s View

Scarr’s departure appears to be a matter of when rather than if, with both Plymouth and Reading offering viable pathways back into regular action. His experience, particularly from Plymouth’s promotion-winning side, makes him an attractive option at League One level. For Wrexham, moving him on could be a crucial step in unlocking further signings as Parkinson looks to equip his squad for the demands of the Championship.
