Middlesbrough play host to Sheffield United in an early kick-off in front of the Sky Sports cameras at the Riverside Stadium on Saturday.
Our Three Predictions for Middlesbrough vs Sheffield United
- First Prediction: Middlesbrough to win – 11/10
- Second Prediction: Both teams to score – no – 1/1
- Third Prediction: Tommy Conway to score at any time – 8/5

First Prediction for Middlesbrough vs Sheffield United – Middlesbrough to win – 11/10
Although Sheffield United were one of the favourites for promotion back to the Premier League after missing out in last season’s play-off final, Ruben Selles’ tenure at Bramall Lane hasn’t gone to plan so far. They are yet to win a game this season, registering defeats against Bristol City, Swansea City and Millwall, as well as a tight defeat to Birmingham City in the Carabao Cup first round. Their hosts for this game, however, have hit the ground running under new boss Rob Edwards, winning all three league games so far. A 1-0 win on the opening day against Swansea has been followed by a 3-0 win over Millwall and a 2-1 win last weekend against 10-man Norwich City. Whilst Boro currently sit second, behind Stoke City, their opponents sit dead-last, behind city rivals Sheffield Wednesday, who are going through financial turmoil. If Edwards and his side are serious about fighting at the top of the table, they need to win against the Blades, who, despite not showing it so far, are a good team. At the moment, it looks likely that the hosts will come away with all three points in this fixture.
Second Prediction for Middlesbrough vs Sheffield United – Both teams to score – no – 1/1
One reason why Sheffield United have been struggling this season is the lack of goals they’ve been scoring. They haven’t scored in their last two games, and have only managed to score two goals in their four matches. On top of this, defensively, the side has been poor, conceding eight goals in all competitions. Although their hosts suffered a blip against Doncaster Rovers in the Carabao Cup first round, losing 4-0 to the third-tier side, they’ve only conceded one league goal so far, keeping two clean sheets, whilst scoring six at the other end. With Boro having good records both in front of goal and defensively, whilst Sheffield United have so far struggled at both ends, the stats suggest that only one side are likely to score in this game, and that’s the hosts.
Third Prediction for Middlesbrough vs Sheffield United – Tommy Conway to score at any time – 8/5
After opening his 2025/26 account against Norwich last weekend, Scottish international Tommy Conway will be hoping he can further his tally against a defensively suspect Blades side. After joining Middlesbrough last season, Conway had a positive start to life at the Riverside last season, scoring 13 Championship goals. With confidence on his side after opening his account last weekend, the 23-year-old will hope he can better this tally and help his side, both against the away side on Saturday and over the course of the season, as Boro look towards promotion.

Full Preview of the Game – Last Results and Head-To-Head
As mentioned above, both sides come into this game on differing form, the hosts winning all three of their Championship fixtures so far, only losing to Doncaster in the Carabao Cup, whilst Sheffield United have yet to win a game in all competitions, and sit bottom of the Championship.
Both sides will be looking to secure promotion to the Premier League after falling short last season. Boro missed out on play-off football by just four places and four points. The Blades did make the play-offs, and beat Bristol City comfortably, but lost in injury time to Sunderland at Wembley.
Since 2010, these sides have met 12 times, all of the clashes coming in the second tier. Middlesbrough normally get the better of their opponents, winning seven times, whilst Ruben Selles’ side have only won four times. Only one clash has ended level at full time. The last time these clubs met, the away side picked up all three points in a 3-1 win at Bramall Lane thanks to goals from Jesurun Rak-Sakyi, Ben Bereton-Diaz and Anel Ahmedhodzic. Delano Burgzorg did grab a then-equaliser before half-time for Boro, but they proved not strong enough for the Blades on that occasion.
